When Pfizer announced the merger of its popular erectile dysfunction drug Viagra and its other drugs, there was a big bang in the news.

A report published inThe New York Timessaid Pfizer's acquisition of the drug, the drug from AstraZeneca in the United States, would save the company $1.9 billion a year by "promoting the best and most promising alternative to Viagra," it said in a statement.

The drug, which has an estimated value of $1.8 billion, was developed by the drugmaker, which includes AstraZeneca. It's been in the news recently for the company's decision to sell a rival drug called Cymbalta, which is prescribed for a variety of mental conditions, including depression and bipolar disorder.

Pfizer's announcement was the result of a study that involved a group of scientists who researched the drug's effects on different types of cells. Researchers were then able to compare the results to the results of a large number of other similar studies, including the one that looked at how the drug affects different types of nerve cells, including those that produce blood flow.

The study, which was published in theNew England Journal of Medicineon Tuesday, found that when Viagra's effects on these cells were compared to those of other drugs such as Prozac, Cialis and Levitra, they were much more effective.
